Summer Fun in July: Activities

July is the heart of summer—warm weather, long days, and endless possibilities. Whether you’re planning time with friends, family, or a partner, there’s a summer-themed activity waiting for you. Here are some great ideas for July fun, organized by the kind of group you’re spending time with.

Friends
For groups of friends, July is perfect for outdoor adventure and festival hopping. Try organizing a beach day with games, coolers, and music. Pack frisbees, paddleball, and sunscreen, and you’ve got the makings of an all-day hang. Music and food festivals are also at their peak in July—whether it’s a city block party, a beer tasting event, or a big-name concert series, these outings offer a great mix of culture and connection. Hiking followed by a lakeside picnic or renting paddleboards also adds just the right touch of summer spontaneity.

Couples
July offers plenty of romantic escapes for couples. A sunset sail or rooftop dinner can make a simple evening feel special. Local wineries and outdoor movie nights in the park are perfect low-key dates. For the more adventurous pair, consider a weekend camping trip or a spontaneous road trip to a charming small town. Stargazing from a quiet spot, especially on a warm night, creates a dreamy, low-cost way to connect.

Young Families
Families with young children thrive on active, engaging summer plans. In July, think water—splash pads, public pools, or backyard sprinklers. Zoos, petting farms, and children’s museums are also great daytime activities. Look for local summer reading programs or free community events, such as puppet shows and parades. A simple evening of s’mores and flashlight tag in the backyard creates lasting memories.

Multi-generational Families
When the whole family gets together—from toddlers to grandparents—flexibility and comfort are key. Renting a beach house or cabin allows everyone to enjoy shared meals, games, and downtime. Day trips to botanical gardens, historic landmarks, or lakefront parks offer inclusive activities. Don’t forget group games like bocce, cornhole, or a family talent show to keep everyone laughing and bonding.

Adult Children & Parents
This group often appreciates activities that encourage reflection and reconnection. Try planning a “foodie day” where you explore local farmers markets, take a cooking class together, or host a wine and cheese night. Shared experiences, like visiting an art exhibit, going on a scenic hike, or catching a minor league baseball game, create space for conversation without pressure. July also brings fireworks—perfect for a nostalgic night together.

Empty-Nesters
For empty-nesters, July is about freedom and rediscovery. Plan a midweek getaway to avoid crowds— whether it’s a coastal town or a national park. Take a sunrise yoga class, try a new hobby like photography, or book tickets to a summer theatre production. Volunteering at a local summer event or mentoring young campers brings purpose and joy, while still enjoying the season’s laid-back vibe.

No matter your group, July invites you to slow down, explore, and savor summer’s best. With a little planning, the month can bring warmth to relationships and memories to last long past Labor Day.

AI + Content = ???

Lately, I’ve been kinda obsessed with AI. Who hasn’t? It’s featured in the majority of headlines across various industries. The best AI/LLMs to use, how to upskill, prompt cheats, and of course, the impact on individuals and careers. And then there is the type of AI: Google’s VEO3 for creative, Claude vs ChatGPT, and all the recent announcements of how major companies are incorporating the tool…

As publishers have more on the line when they test and learn… here in this humble blog(?), I do not. So, I think I’ll let AI create some content for this site for a while, leaving the errors in on purpose, without fact-checking… lets see what we get. Let me know your thoughts…

This weekend, my thoughts began to wander to destinations unseen. It happens every year, multiple times a year to me. I get restless when “there is nothing on the calendar” and then want to begin planning a trip. There is little else that inspires the deep research done to perfect the one week a year my family spends as a foursome.

Unfortunately, no plans can be made until new employment is solidified – working on that and hope this week proves fruitful with new role applications and networking outreach. That shared, I still am wondering what kind of summer family trip we can pull off. Could we get to a national park? Or maybe a local trip to explore an area of our own state we’ve not seen. Last year, was Paris. Two years ago, we visited family in CO. then journeyed to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. It was overwhelming to see and understand such beautiful places exist in the world, and I am grateful to have seen, hiked and visited these places.

Last year’s trip almost didn’t happen thanks to job loss #1 but I landed somewhere and got going on the work. This also meant I got going on planning the ultimate family vacation to Paris, visiting the usual and some unusual spots while enjoying apartment life in one of the Parisian arrondissements. I can go on and on about these trips. Our adventures have taken us on a roadtrip from California’s LA to San Francisco on Pacific Highway 1 and the southern coast of Iceland. We’ve hopped around London and sunned in Greece…Work has taken me to Cannes, Vevey, and Geneva.

GRATEFUL: So very grateful for the ability to see these places with my favorite people. Travel changes you: you bring your exploration home with you, becoming part of your DNA. While the calendar may be bare on Jan 6… I am optimistic for a summer adventure: local or afar. Time will tell. In the meantime…

What are your travel plans this year?

“A cardinal lives in a tree of hope and love. (S)He is the guardian of all our wishes and dreams.”– Unknown.

Day three. What have I added to my day? Exercise. A gym trip today is needed, and I will go with B. – maybe even N? Need a moment to do some college work for B.

I am glad for the holidays, yet I am eager to return our home to its normal undecorated state. The incoming cold temps coming to the NE make me eager to hibernate this weekend while also including time to see visiting family tonight and Sunday. Fireplaces, red wine, and a good book are on my mind. Also, there will be another viewing of Wicked, if I am being honest. 🙂

WEAR: Gotta be honest. All the hype around expensive leggings has me appreciating my Crzy Yoga Amazon find. These are in heavy rotation: a great deep brown color for the girlies staying on trend.

EAT: Dinner plans tonight: homemade pizza! Great dough recipe here. B. made one NYE and topped it with ricotta, fresh figs, mushrooms, and prosciutto. Immediately a fam. favorite.

GRATITUDE: Coffee with Hubs., communication with my BILs, a plan to see my parents before they fly to warmer climes, and an unexpected morning visitor…

As I sat here this morning, I was visited by a female cardinal with a perfect red-orange plume. She landed and paused on the windowsill, looking into my office and watching me for a moment before taking flight again. It felt extraordinary to have a personal visit from her, and it served as a reminder to put some birdfeed out.

There is lore about cardinals being a divine visit from angels or someone you loved who passed. Female cardinals hold their legacy as symbols of the strength and resilience of women, encouraging their humans to embrace their unique qualities and stand tall in their endeavors. Her presence hints at hidden strength and the courage to tackle life’s challenges.

A beautiful message for the day and one I am grateful for.

A goal without a plan is just a wish. – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Planning.

We are on day two of this new year, and all those ideas need to be put into a plan. How do you break down an idea or a dream into a plan? What is the first step? Beats me. I am sitting here writing this entry, surrounded by my notebook, coffee, and lists of to-dos I’ve blissfully ignored during the holidays.

I guess the first step is just that: starting. One step at a time will bring more creativity and more ideas, and with the help of Google, my trusty notebook (instead of a yearly planner I am fighting the desire to purchase), here we are…

BUYING: Planners? Oh my. This article from The Strategist is living in my head rent-free. Many are available on Amazon. Happy planning! And please let me know if you make the purchase – I am close to losing this battle…

WATCHED: Did you head to the movies to catch Wicked? Did you watch it streaming this week? It’s now available to rent or buy on many outlets, including AppleTV and Amazon Prime.

PLANNING: The last regular season of NFL games is this weekend, and I am excited to watch my team: Go, Bills! I grabbed this sweater to support The Bills in the playoffs!

WORK: I am again between roles while doing some advisory work. Organizing interviews, tracking roles, and networking will become my FT job next week. Maybe this is a good justification for that planner? :). The white-collar recession you may have heard about is real: middle managers and executives who were let go for budget savings. I am optimistic, though, and will update regularly.

What movie recs are on your to-watch list?

2025: New Year, New Focus.

Happy 2025!!

It’s been about a year since my last entry. Journaling has always been a struggle. This time, I want to flip this on its head. I am archiving posts to move into gratitude and positive thoughts. One of my firm beliefs is that you get what you give. Another more straightforward way of thinking about this is Karma. With this in mind, I want to focus on sharing joy, gratitude, and appreciation for where I am. I will walk away from what I perceive to be missing. I would love your thoughts: the inbox is open, as are comments.

Gratitude: I am grateful for my healthy parents coming over for the first dinner of 2025 and watching Wicked with us. N is home from school, and his girlfriend is here enjoying the time together for this fresh start. I am thankful for T., who handled our New Year Balloons with zeal, creating a festive vibe for us that lasted long after the kiddos left for their evening plans.

Reading: I recently started reading Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Still working through character dev., and am getting to the more interesting characters. Hope to find a little reading time today. Find it here.

Wearing: Still in these star PJs, which seemed the right way to bring in the new year!

Eating: I made sausage lasagna yesterday for today’s dinner – understanding that after a late night, I would not be up for anything more than reheating. The recipe I followed is one part courtesy of Alison Roman and the NY Time Cooking app and one part experience making lasagna for others.

What are you doing today?

My Biggest (Realistic) Fear… Realized.

This post was written on February 17, 2024.

As of 2 days ago, 34,000 people in tech, media, and advertising have been laid off.

I am now one of those people.

As the primary income provider for my family, this has been my biggest fear. That makes sense, right – without a steady income, how do we live? How would we manage without that paycheck every two weeks? How would we save for college? Save for retirement? Forget things like family vacations right now. And, worst of all, what if I can’t get back in, given my legally protected demographic? Or find something new?

It’s 7:48 am on the Saturday after I was let go. (I was let go. I was let go!) No sleep came that night. Sleep came last night. I feel… an expected yet odd mixture of hyperactivity and anxiety, with a dose of fear all bubbling under a forced calm demeanor. vAt times. Other times, I do feel fine: not great, not the Queen of the world. But I’ll take it fine and build from there.

I believe that I am fine. One is because I realize that the only part of my job I liked was the people I did it with. Supporting them and trying to make it better for them. The other elements were so… well, let’s leave that alone.

So, if I am fine. And I have some runway… hey kids, save for a rainy day because the rain will come… what do I do now? What happens next?

I have no fucking clue. But here is what I did…

-I told my family and besties. Love, support, and wine truly will be needed on this journey.
-I repeated as often as possible I will be fine, we will be fine. It’s my new mantra.
-I asked for a recruiter and legal referrals. Always have an employment lawyer ready to consult on your situation.
-I made a list. Actually, I made a lot of lists. I now walk around with a notebook 2″ deep to write everything I think of. 2024 tax advice? Who in my network do I contact? Who do I need to connect with?

Then I packed a bag and the car. It’s Feb break week, and we are off on our annual road trip to FL. In fact, I’m writing this from somewhere in VA.

It may not surprise you, dear reader, that this writing canvas of mine will shift from a sour-to-mid relationship and now focus on this journey. All of it: Tips, tricks. Tough days. Good days.

And if you are in the same position – let’s support each other! How are you doing? How are you approaching this journey?
